Resumo: Inglês — conectivos e referência pronominal

Essência. O edital cobra itens gramaticais para a compreensão: valor dos conectivos (pode trocar?) e referente de pronomes (it, this, that, they, which). Mesmo raciocínio de coesão em LP.

  • Contraste: but, yet, however, nevertheless, nonetheless, still, even so, whereas, while.
  • Concessão: although, even though (+ oração); despite / in spite of (+ nome ou -ing). Ex.: Although it was raining, he drove = Despite the rain, he drove.
  • Causa: because, since, as, due to, owing to. Consequência: so, therefore, thus, hence.
  • Adição: moreover, furthermore, besides. Condição: if, unless (= if not), provided that.
  • Yet: contraste (= even so) ou tempo em negativa (not yet). Still: ainda ou mesmo assim.
  • This/that no início de frase retomam a ideia inteira; which após vírgula pode retomar a oração.
  • The former = o primeiro; the latter = o último.
  • Teste: substitua o pronome pelo candidato e releia.

Exceções e distinções. It expletivo (It is hoped that...) não tem referente. O referente nem sempre é o termo mais próximo: they = books for young people; its throat = do filhote, a mãe é her.

Pegadinha Cebraspe. Trocar yet (contraste) por therefore → errado; por even so → certo (PRF 2021).

Lembre também: that retomando a decisão do Texas de isolar a rede foi certo; since causal lido como temporal derruba o item.

Visão geral

O item I.2 do edital ("itens gramaticais relevantes para a compreensão") é cobrado sobretudo por (a) valor semântico de conectivos e possibilidade de substituição e (b) referente de pronomes (it, this, that, they, which).

  • Even though / even if: concessão; even so: contraste (= nevertheless).
  • While / as: tempo ou contraste/causa, conforme o contexto.

Referência

  • This / that no início de frase costumam retomar a ideia inteira anterior ("Texas has made a conscious decision to isolate its grid... That means..." → retoma a decisão de isolar a rede).
  • It retoma o singular mais saliente; they/them/their retomam plurais; which retoma o antecedente imediato ou a oração anterior (após vírgula).
  • The former = o primeiro; the latter = o último.

Pontos-chave

  • Substituição válida exige mesma relação lógica: yet ↔ even so / however / nevertheless (contraste) ✔; yet ↔ therefore ✘.
  • Despite/in spite of nunca seguidos de oração com sujeito e verbo conjugado.

  • It expletivo: em "It is hoped (that) the scholarships will…", It é sujeito antecipatório, sem referente; item que o liga a um substantivo anterior ("mentorship") está errado.
  • Referente ≠ termo mais próximo: "books for young people should differ from books for adults except for the fact that they must reckon with…" → they = books for young people, não adults; "Children are not being taught enough about plants at a time when they could be the answer to global warming" → they = plants; "Much of it relies on open-source software" → it = the Internet, não bubble gum.
  • Reflexivos e possessivos: "a method that could more than pay for itself" → itself = method; "these (rights)… in themselves" → os direitos, não os filósofos; "the kangaroo mom uses her muscles to pump milk down its throat" → its = do filhote (a mãe é her).

  • Yet, however, nevertheless, even so, still = contraste.
  • Although / even though = concessão (liga orações).
  • Despite / in spite of + substantivo ou -ing.
  • Since / as: causa ou tempo — decida pelo contexto.
  • This/that no início de frase retomam a ideia anterior.
  • Unless = if not.

Flashcards de Inglês — conectivos e referência pronominal

Tente lembrar antes de virar o card.

  • Em inglês, a que costumam remeter This / That no início de uma frase?

    Revelar resposta

Retomam a ideia inteira da frase anterior, não um termo isolado (ex.: "...decision to isolate its grid. That means..."

E por therefore?

    Revelar resposta

Yet (contraste) = however / nevertheless / even so ("mesmo assim") → troca por Even so é válida.

  • Inglês: em "It is hoped (that)…" ou "It is said that…", a que se refere It?

    Revelar resposta

  • Inglês: o referente de they / them / it é sempre o termo mais próximo?

    Revelar resposta

Não. Teste pelo sentido e pelo número. Ex.: "books for young people should differ from books for adults except… they must reckon with critics" → they = books for young people; "at a time when they could be the answer to global warming" → plants; "Much of it relies on open-source software" → the Internet; "the physicists needed… assumptions…, they determined" → the physicists.

  • Inglês: como achar o referente de reflexivos (itself, themselves) e possessivos (its, their, her)?

    Revelar resposta

Reflexivo retoma o sujeito da própria oração; possessivo concorda com o possuidor (its = coisa/animal; her = feminino; their = plural). Ex.: "a method that could pay for itself" → method; "see these (rights) as justified in themselves" → rights; "mom uses her muscles to pump milk down its throat" → joey; "samples…, bringing their temperature up" → samples.

Questões de Inglês — conectivos e referência pronominal

  1. Questão 1 · Certo ou Errado

Long-haul truck drivers are among the most exposed workers on any highway network, and fatigue remains one of their deadliest hazards. Studies of road crashes involving heavy vehicles suggest that drowsiness plays a role in a significant share of collisions, although the exact figure is hard to establish, since tired drivers who survive rarely admit to having dozed off.

The problem is rooted in the economics of freight. Many drivers are paid by the trip or by the kilometre rather than by the hour, which encourages them to cut rest stops short. Tight delivery windows set by shippers add further pressure. As a result, some drivers turn to stimulants to stay awake, a practice that may delay sleep but does not restore alertness.

Regulators have responded with rules limiting continuous driving time and requiring minimum rest periods. Electronic logging devices, which record when a vehicle is moving, have made these rules harder to dodge. However, enforcement depends on inspections, and secure parking areas where drivers can actually rest are still scarce along many routes.

Technology offers another line of defence. Some fleets now install in-cab cameras that track eye movements and sound an alarm when a driver's eyelids stay closed for too long. Supporters argue that such systems save lives; critics counter that constant monitoring erodes drivers' privacy and may shift responsibility from employers to individual workers.

A researcher who studies transport safety at a public university put it bluntly: no device can replace a good night's sleep. In her view, unless pay structures change, drivers will keep trading rest for income, and the roads will remain more dangerous than they need to be.

No trecho "since tired drivers who survive rarely admit to having dozed off", o conectivo "since" introduz uma justificativa e poderia ser substituído por "because", sem prejuízo do sentido do texto.

    Revelar gabarito

    Gabarito: Certo

Certo.

  2. Questão 2 · Certo ou Errado

No quarto parágrafo, a expressão "such systems" remete aos registradores eletrônicos de jornada mencionados no parágrafo anterior.

    Revelar gabarito

    Gabarito: Errado

Errado. "Such systems" retoma as "in-cab cameras that track eye movements and sound an alarm", mencionadas na frase imediatamente anterior, no próprio quarto parágrafo — e não os "Electronic logging devices" do terceiro parágrafo.

  3. Questão 3 · Certo ou Errado

Highways are not only the arteries of legitimate trade; they also serve as corridors for one of the world's most lucrative illegal markets. Wild animals captured in forests are frequently moved by road, hidden in car boots, buses and lorries, before reaching urban buyers or ports from which they are shipped abroad.

Parrots, songbirds, turtles and small primates are among the species most often seized. Traffickers typically pack them into plastic bottles, socks or cramped boxes to escape detection. Conservation groups estimate that most animals taken from the wild die before they reach their final destination, either from suffocation, dehydration or stress. This means that each animal sold represents several others that perished along the way.

Roadside inspections remain a key tool against the trade. Officers trained to recognise suspicious cargo, unusual noises or the smell of animal waste have intercepted shipments that would otherwise have gone unnoticed. Yet traffickers adapt quickly. When checkpoints become predictable, they switch routes, split loads among several vehicles or travel at night.

Seizure is only the first step, however. Rescued animals need veterinary care, and many cannot be released immediately because they are weak or have lost their natural fear of humans. Rehabilitation centres are often overcrowded and underfunded, which forces authorities to make difficult choices about where to send them.

Experts also point out that penalties for wildlife crime tend to be light compared with those for drug or arms trafficking, even though the same criminal networks are sometimes involved in all three. Stronger sentences, combined with intelligence sharing between police and environmental agencies, could make the business less attractive.

No início de frase, "Yet" tem valor adversativo, equivalente a "However"/"Even so".

  4. Questão 4 · Certo ou Errado

Stronger sentences, combined with intelligence sharing between police and environmental agencies, could make the business less attractive.

No trecho "which forces authorities to make difficult choices about where to send them", o pronome "them" retoma "Rehabilitation centres".

    Revelar gabarito

    Gabarito: Errado

Errado. "Them" retoma os "Rescued animals": as autoridades precisam decidir para onde enviar os animais resgatados, já que os centros de reabilitação estão superlotados. O referente não é o termo mais próximo, mas o que faz sentido como objeto de "send".

  5. Questão 5 · Certo ou Errado

Police forces in several countries have started to use live facial recognition, a technology that compares the faces of passers-by with images stored in watch lists. Cameras mounted on vans or poles scan crowds in real time, and an alert is sent to officers whenever the software finds a probable match.

Advocates say the system helps locate fugitives and missing persons far faster than traditional methods. In some trials, wanted suspects were arrested within minutes of walking past a camera. Moreover, the technology does not get tired or distracted, unlike human officers watching hours of footage.

Civil liberties groups, on the other hand, warn that mass scanning turns everyone into a potential suspect. They also raise concerns about accuracy. Earlier generations of algorithms were found to produce more false matches for women and people with darker skin, partly because they had been trained on unrepresentative data sets. Developers claim that recent versions have narrowed this gap, but independent audits are not always available to confirm it.

A false match is not merely a technical glitch. For the person wrongly stopped, it may mean being questioned in public, searched or even detained. Critics argue that the burden of proving innocence should never fall on someone simply because a machine flagged their face.

Some cities have banned the use of facial recognition by public agencies altogether, while others allow it under strict conditions, such as judicial authorisation, clear limits on how long images can be stored and regular reporting on results. Lawmakers in many places, however, have yet to set any specific rules, leaving decisions largely in the hands of police leaders.
